Tsavo is the best safari destination from Mombasa with a substantial wildlife population and breathtaking landscape. Tsavo Area consists of two national parks: Tsavo East (Kenya’s largest national park) and Tsavo West. Together they cover more than 20,000 square km, though a substantial part of Tsavo East is rarely toured by casual visitors (so the area looks larger on map than it feels on the ground). Beside the two national parks there are two smaller private parks – Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary and Lumo Community Wildlife Sanctuary – in the area, which are connected to Tsavo National Parks and wild animals can roam freely in all of these parks (so there is no significant difference between these parks in the number of wild animals). The Tsavo area accommodates substantial wildlife population. Beside the most commonly seen large mammals like zebras, giraffes, elephants, buffalos, lions, impalas and gazelles, if you are lucky, you can also see cheetahs, leopards and kudus here. While wildlife is less easily spotted here than in other national parks in Kenya, because the area – especially Tsavo West – is a bit bushy, landscape is breathtaking and Tsavo West also offers other interesting sights, like Mzima Springs and lava flows.
